Rescuers Search For Missing Man In Collapsed Bunker On Cape

BARNSTABLE (CBS) – A massive search and rescue operation is underway in the woods of Hyannis Ponds in Barnstable, where a trench and tunnel network was discovered.

Police fear 29-year-old Jason Bryant of West Yarmouth may be buried inside after a portion of the trench collapsed, and now massive boulders are blocking entrance to the tunnels.

“This wasn’t dug in a few days, it was dug over the course of some time,” said Sgt. Sean Sweeney of the Barnstable Police Department.

Crews were seen at the site digging and passing buckets of dirt as they try to excavate the area. They spent considerable time shoring up the unstable walls of the trench made of soft sand.

The question “why was it constructed?” has been put aside for now. But they believe a missing West Yarmouth man is responsible for the bunker he apparently dug himself. His green GMC pickup truck was found in the area by dog walkers, along with personal items such as a backpack.

Police say a dog walker noticed Bryant in the woods as far back as early May, at one point carrying an axe along a trail, and the sounds of shoveling could be heard.

Bryant was gone from his family’s home over Memorial Day weekend, and when he didn’t return by Monday they grew concerned.

The discovery of the trench itself was called “bizarre.”

“You could probably put a small compact car in one of them, a tunnel goes off from that. A six-foot ladder drops into one of the pits,” said Sgt. Sweeney.

Crews sent in robotic cameras to get a closer look, but so far they have been unsuccessful. They now plan to bring in heavier equipment to move some boulders blocking access to some of the tunnels where they are desperate to search.

Now, don't get me wrong, I feel for this guy's family and friends, so I will ask this as gently as I can.  WTF is he doing digging tunnels and bunkers in the woods?  Does he think he's Steve McQueen in the Great Escape?  Listen, we've all heard the saying, "if you mess with the bull, you get the horns."  Well, if you dig tunnels underground, you're gonna get caved in on.


This dude obviously needs help beyond the rescue.  Let's hope he makes it and works long enough to pay the state back for his insanity.

Endangered Whales Gathering Near the Cape, Poising for Attack

A record number of the critically endangered North Atlantic right whales has gathered close off the beaches of Provincetown and Truro and is expected to stay there for at least another week, said Dr. Charles “Stormy’’ Mayo, senior scientist at the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown.

Researchers counted more than 100 whales during an aerial survey Tuesday, with a preliminary count of more than 200 total, a little less than half of the known population. At some points the whales can be seen just a few yards offshore, to a quarter-mile out.

The whales are drawn to the area this time of year by the stores of zooplankton. Mayo said he thinks there is a large number of the whales there now because the area is particularly rich in zooplankton this year.

“We don’t understand that particularly well, but it’s clearly a combination of oceanographic processes and a lot of marine biology,’’ he said. “There are currents that bring the plankton into the area and local currents that cause them to concentrate, and it’s probably an overlapping of a lot of physical processes.Right now, the situation is good for that, just as when you grow plants in your backyard. Some years, there are better situations than others.’’

BULLSHIT.  These whales are pissed and they are getting ready for vengeance.  Hide yo kids, hide yo wife, and hide yo husbands too, cause these right whales are raping errbody up in here.  This zooplankton is just an excuse for them to loiter off the coast of the Cape and plan their next move.  I don't like it.  I don't trust them.  


Also, the marine biologists don't understand it?  That's your job bro, figure it out before its too late!  Unless the Globe found the dude posing as a marine biologist trying to impress a chick like George Costanza.  Wrong place, wrong time and his spot just got blown the fuck up.
